Veggie garden update

The Captain and I have been busy with several things over the last couple of weeks; one of them being our veggie garden. Here are some photo's of what we are expecting (eagerly) to harvest in the coming months.

Potatoes - planted in a bag to save on space and "just for fun".

 Aubergine - the blossoms are just lovely!

Butternut - we didn't sow this; it must've come up from a seed that was in our homemade compost.   

Tomatoes - I am so excited to harvest these sometime soon! There's just nothing like a fresh tomato from one's own garden!

Salsify - I'm not familiar with this, but The Captain promises it is really good.

Rhubarb - which will take a bit longer before we can harvest, but definitely worth the wait!

Gardening mystery

Towards the end of winter I was very excited to get some spring and summer flowering annual seeds in the ground; and that is just what I did. With seed bombs and direct sowing into the soil. Several packets of seeds later, I decided to discard the empty packets and not make a note of what went in where. Hence my "problem" to identify this mysterious, monstrous plant in the garden. 

It is now about chest height and still going strong. Looks like a flower is about to unfold itself and I'm rather excited to see what it will look like. Perhaps then I'll be able to tell what it is. It might be a good idea to keep a gardening journal to record everything I do, as I have a habit of buying seeds and throwing them around the garden at random. Bouh!  I'll keep you posted!

The story of the Weaver bird...

Poor guy had been hard at work, building this nest for days on end, in rather bad weather.

We went away for the weekend, and when we returned....

the nest was gone (destroyed by the female) and another one

appeared in a different spot....

Poor little guy... I hope he gets one right eventually; these females seem to be quite picky about their homes... (smile)))))))

A "barrow" full of colour

Dare I? Again? Hmmm, okay just this once more, because it's too pretty not to share. The vygies I planted in  my rusty old wheel-barrow had finally made their appearance in full glory!

On a cloudy, wet and cold day they look like this...

And then, when the sun is out and it is lovely and warm, they look like this...

Isn't it just lovely? It's like they celebrate the coming summer with us....(((((smile)))))

Green graffiti

I saw pictures of Green Graffiti for the first time on the Facebook page of Du Cote de chez Vous and loved it soo much, I had to find out more about it. I found  lovely images and recipes here, here and here.

In the meantime I had made my own and I'm anxious to see it grow into lush, green moss. Here are some photo's of what I did....

 Freshly harvested moss is the best

 Most of the soil rinsed off....

 Not very appealing, but it's not for drinking anyway...

Painted on the wall of our shed

I'm adding some corn syrup to the remainder of the paint to see if it will be thicker and easier to paint with. The painted "wall" is South facing (in the Southern hemisphere) which is ideal for the moss to grow. For now we are very curious to see what happens over the next few weeks.

Beautiful Karoo

A few days in the Karoo with my cheetah and my captain was absolute bliss!! We stayed in the Touwsberg Nature Reserve which is a couple of hours drive from where we live. This region in South Africa is definitely worth a visit.
