Crochet

I have been REAL busy crocheting lately and our blanket is close to the "finished" status - something I'm really looking forward to. I bought a lovely book (will share sometime soon) with 500 crochet pieces and have been trying out different stitches and patterns for our blanket. It will be a real patchwork/quilt/blanket/piece of art, hehehe....

So far I've made 70 blocks and have about another 30 to go, phew! What do you think?

Crochet bunting

I finally "got around" to finishing this crochet bunting which was a project I started last year (yikes, I know!) and intended to give to my friend who was having a baby. Well, little Sarah is eight (!!!) months already and I was very pleased to finally give it to her yesterday. She's started sleeping in her own room and the bunting came as a perfect gift to celebrate the occasion. I'll take some pictures of her room to show for another time. I had to drape these over the cupboards in the kitchen to get the "feel" for what it will look like, since it's so long and I had nowhere else to do so.

I like these so much, that I've decided to make a whole bunch to sell at a market. Will keep you posted on that too.

Crochet blanket

To continue with my "dream" to give our bedroom a make-over and keep us warm in winter at the same time, I started to crochet granny squares for a blanket for our bed. I chose some lovely shades of grey for this and yes, I know; grey in winter is not all that great, but that's my colour preference at the moment, so....

See what I mean? These colours are really lovely! I'm hoping to have 15 squares done each week until I have enough for a blanket big enough to cover our bed. Ha! Will keep you posted on this project, for sure!

Crochet again

It's in the air. Cooler nights and the sun coming up later each day; winter is on the way. With that in mind, I started a couple of crochet projects. This one took me a couple of hours only.

I need to alter the original pattern a bit, but I'm planning on making a few more of these before winter is upon us. Then there are several more patterns on Pinterest  which I'm very keen to try out too. I'll keep you updated!

Crochet bunting

So, I've been busy yet again with a bit of crochet and this is the result; crochet bunting. These are perfect for indoors and outdoors and I'm planning to make one with bigger "flags" to string up in our trees, as soon as the weather warms up a bit. 

I'm also thinking of a few in more muted colours, for kid's rooms. As soon as I have a couple ready, I'll post some photo's.

Crochet

I've been busy looking for more patterns of lovely crochet pieces and found dozens.

Above is a picture of a pattern I tried out recently (don't you just love those colours?)

This is what I did with it (after I failed to get it like it's supposed to be in the pattern - I will try again though, to get it right....hehe

I thought I'd make a starched bowl or even a cute little lampshade; but the starching process didn't work out all that well.... It looks pretty okay when turned upside down...

Even seen from above (like this) it doesn't look all that bad, but there are lots of little bits of starch everywhere that looks really horrible (at least I can wash it out). I used cornflour and water; does anyone have a better idea of how I can starch this, pleeeease?

I'm back!!

Okay, so after a long (enough) absence I'm back. My computer is fixed and only some emails were lost; I had a "fresh" backup of everything else (phew!!).

Been busy with lots of different stuff including helping the Captain with the building of our kitchen (photo's to follow when it's at least half done...).

Crochet is still one of my favourite hobbies (of the moment) and I've come across a wonderful blog for crochet patterns/ideas, called Olav's World. It is jam-packed with fabulous patterns for smaller projects. I'm a sucker for "instant results gratification" which is why I like to crochet so much.

This flower pattern I got from here. It is super easy to make and doesn't take all that long; give it a try - you'll be hooked!!

Crochet projects

I'm learning to crochet from the Net, and the patterns and tutorials are just fantastic. My personal favourites are those tutorials on YouTube that takes next to no time at all to finish, and with instant results. Here are some of them....

I saw this cute project here on The Royal Sisters blog....

Some of  them are quite wonky, hence the angle of the photo; but I'm getting there.... Just to have enough time to sit and watch YouTube in order to crochet lots of  cute little "doilies"... But when I look at these and the designs, it's just SO worth it!!!!


More about crochet in a few days.... It seems I have a "small" obsession with this craft now, ha!

Crochet

I saw a beautiful crochet cushion cover on the "wisecraft" blog  here and decided to make one of my own. The most fun was going to the little wool shop to choose my colours. Here's what I've done so far...

choosing the wool was fun, and my collection will grow even more now I'm getting the "hang" of crochet...

my "guys" were having a lot of fun teasing me about all these little "scraps" of wool I was accumulating, until they saw the result....

one side of the cushion cover completed; I'm not sure yet how I will make the other side, but it'l come to me.
I must say, I'm quite pleased with the result for a "first-timer"

Vintage doilies

I remember the beautiful doilies from my childhood but I also remember giving the lot away when I reached a certain age.... (Bouh!) When I saw these pictures and read about these lovely ideas I wish I could tell that young woman to hang onto those doilies and stash them away for "one day"...... sigh!!!! Now I visit our local thrift stores on a regular basis, looking for doilies to transform into lovely pieces like below. I'm not often lucky to find some, but my collection is growing slowly, slowly. One of my favourites is the second picture below; the starched doily "bowl".  Cute, isn't it?

Learning to crochet

Okay..... Now that you've seen the experts at work, I'm ready to show you what I've done so far.... Don't laugh, okay? I'm quite proud of what I've achieved with these little try-outs and I will keep practising and crochet funny little things until I get it 100% right!! In no time at all I will also be boasting  a lovely granny- square blanket or cushion (or two!!).

These are all trials to practice different stitches. The confusion comes when I look at tutorials/patterns from Australia, America, Europe and South Africa - the terminology is not the same everywhere, so it takes me a while to figure out what it is they talk about....  Wish me luck though!!
